Day 2 - Bickham House is a 17th century house set in a wooded valley west of Exeter. The oldest part of the garden is the walled garden which is certainly as old as the original house. About one third of it is used as a kitchen garden, and the rest is divided up into lawns, flower beds, a herb garden, a pergola garden, greenhouses and a polythene tunnel for growing plants for sale. The top third of the walled garden is planted with specimen trees and in 1999 an avenue of palm trees was added. A lake has also been made in the field in front of the house. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens has an Italian Garden, American & Stream Gardens, Mediterranean & Rose Gardens, Fernery & Shell House, Hermitage Garden and the Pinetum & Arboretum as well as four glasshouses and a museum! The Bicton Woodland Railway is special for railway enthusiasts as it runs on the only 18-inch (457 mm) gauge leisure line left in Britain. The train departs from Bicton Station and winds its way through the Pinetum, home to many of their champion trees, to Hermitage Station at the far end of the park. It returns along the banks of the Great Lake to complete its journey of around 1.5 miles (2.4 km).
Day 3 - East Lambrook Manor Gardens is a Grade 1 listed garden which is known as the premier example of an English Cottage Garden style and is noted for its specialist collections of snowdrops, hellebores and hardy geraniums. Heale Garden -Trout filled streams crossing under the authentic Japanese tea house and below the red Nikko bridge meander through the woodland garden, a rich gardener's paradise.
