Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - You are greeted by our local representative and check in to your hotel. Welcome drink before dinner.

Day 2 - Stresa & the Borromean Islands - Take the boat from Stresa to the islands, which lie in a wide gulf surrounded by mountains. The islands take their name from the aristocratic Borromean family, who took ownership of the land in the 16th and 17th centuries. The islands of Bella and Madre were transformed into grand, luxurious residences, while the third island, named dei Pescatori after its age-old fishing community, was left to continue its traditional way of life.

Day 3 - Lugano - A leisurely day as you travel by coach to Lugano in Switzerland, which is situated on the northern shoreline of Lake Lugano. Set within a bay surrounded by mountains, its town centre is full of Mediterranean style squares and arcades with numerous parks and public gardens adorned with sub-tropical plants. Included is a tour of the city aboard the petit train “La freccia rossa” which allows you to discover the beauty of the city, the San Salvatore and Monte Brè funiculars, the Casino and the Lungolago.

Day 4 - Centovalli Railway & Locarno - The little train winds its way up the Centovalli Valley passing many traditional villages and old stone houses. From the train enjoy the spectacular scenery of beech and chestnut woods, alpine pasture, mountains and waterfalls. The railway crosses 83 bridges and travels through 31 tunnels between Domodossola and Locarno. In Locarno explore the town centre or ride up the funicular to the Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary. All the cobbled alleys of the ‘old town’ lead to the colonnaded Piazza Grande. Your return journey is by coach, stopping en route in Ascona, a pretty little artist style Swiss town.

Day 5 - San Giulio - Visit the island of San Giulio, a tiny island that stands in the middle of Lake Orta. This is a place of mists and devotion, ideal for a day out in search of peace and quiet. Travel by boat from the hotel to Orta where you transfer to the island. Once there, the main path which circuits the island divides itself into two smaller paths: the Way of Silence and the Way of Meditation. The only people who live here are the Benedictine monks of the monastery MaterEcclesiae. From the prestigious Basilica of San Giulio admire a breath-taking lake view, dedicated to the saint that saved the island.

Day 6 - Milan - Day at leisure in Milan, Italy’s second-largest city. Milan is one of Europe’s most important tourist destinations, also rated the 7th best city in Europe for tourism. Milan is famous for its wealth of historical and modern sights - the Duomo, one of the biggest and grandest Gothic cathedrals in the world, La Scala, one of the best established opera houses in the globe, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, an ancient and glamorous arcaded shopping gallery, the Brera art gallery, with some of the finest artistic works in Europe, the Pirelli tower, a majestic example of 1960s modernist Italian architecture, the San Siro, a huge and famed stadium, or the Castello Sforzesco, a grand medieval castle.

Day 7 - Return to the UK.
