The stunningly picturesque and tranquil region of the Dordogne with its abundance of pretty villages, meandering rivers and fascinating history, is an ideal location for a short break. This tour will show you the the best that this delightful area has to offer, from the town of Rocamadour which is built into cliffs rising above the River Alzou, to the narrow alleyways of the Old Town of Sarlat. There are so many things to experience including a trip on the River Dordogne in a gabare boat passing fairytale castles and fields of walnut trees.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - Check–in at St Pancras for your rail journey by Eurostar to Paris, travelling onwards to Brive by train. A coach will then transfer you to the Rocamadour area where you will be based for this tour.
 
Day 2 - Rocamadour is a famous pilgrimage site. This incredibly picturesque town is built into the cliff in stages rising from the River Alzou. Crowned by the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary, Rocamadour offers fantastic views over the countryside and the meandering river below.  Martel is a medieval 'city of seven towers', and today is a picturesque village. You will travel on the restored Truffadou Train which was once used to transport truffles to St Denis Les Martel. This scenic journey takes you through a picturesque valley passing meadows and woodland.

Day 3 - The Old Town of Sarlat with its weekly market is a pleasure to explore with its maze of narrow alleyways and its mansions constructed in golden sandstone, make it one of the most attractive French medieval towns. La Roque-Gageac is a pretty town situated on the banks of the Dordogne with ochre-coloured houses sheltering under overhanging cliffs. A river Dordogne trip by traditional gabare boat travels past five of the valley's most beautiful castles and fields of walnut trees. Enjoy the peace of the natural surroundings on this gentle and relaxing journey.

Day 4 - Rocamadour where the morning is at your leisure to explore at your own pace. Le Gouffre de Padirac is anawe-inspiring cave system formed over thousands of years. A guided tour of this magical place, by boat and on foot, passes rippling pools, haunting caverns, dramatic limestone formations and waterfalls. The largest cavern, the Salle du Grand Dôme, is a true spectacle.

Day 5 - Returning by coach to Brive where you board your train to Paris ad then onwards by Eurostar to London.
