Day 1 - The historic city of Gloucester owes its name, strategic location and much of its layout to many centuries of Roman occupation and was one of the three most important cities in England (the others were London and Winchester). Key sights in the city include Gloucester Cathedral, one of the finest medieval buildings in the country and the burial place of royalty and Gloucester Docks. The historic Victorian docks are a unique and inspiring destination and the city is the most inland port in Britain, and the docks are dominated by towering warehouses which stand proud along the water’s edge. At the Waterways Museum you can see skilled shipwrights and riggers repairing, restoring and building traditional ships and rigging all year round in Tommi Nielsen’s dry dock on the West Quay. On the quayside you will find boats from the UK's Historic Boat Collection including colourful narrow boats and an iconic steam dredger.
Day 2 - At Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas market you can enjoy delicious German food, soak up the atmosphere and explore over 180 beautiful stalls. With over 2 million visitors a year, it is the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany or Austria. The market has many unusual and handmade gifts, including ceramics, candles, glasswork, jewellery and Christmas decorations. The Birmingham International Tattoo is held at the National Indoor Arena andin 2013 will celebrate its 25th anniversary. This show includes the participation of a mix of military bands, trumpeters, drums and pipes, providing a fantastic sound as they play, march and parade around in formation. There will be massed bands playing, dog team displays, an acrobatic display from gymnasts and wonderful dancers. There will also be spectacular opening and closing ceremonies, patriotic singing, and special guest appearances throughout the event.
Day 3 - The Severn Valley Railway for a relaxing journey following the river Severn. The Black Country Living Museum isuniquely placed to tell the story of the creation of the world’s first industrial landscape. There are over fifty authentic shops, houses and workshops which have been carefully reconstructed to preserve the character of the region when its manufacturers bought worldwide fame to Black Country Towns. You will be transported back in time from the modern exhibition halls to the canal-side village, where costumed demonstrators and working craftsmen bring the buildings to life with their local knowledge, practical skills and unique Black Country humour.
