Day 1– Departing our selected pick up points this morning, we make our way to the coast for the short channel crossing to the continent. Travelling through Belgium we make our way to the Duchy of Luxembourg and your hotel in Vianden, where having checked in, your evening meal is included.
Day 2 – Today we begin in the medieval town of Vianden where we begin with a guided tour of the Castle. Constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries, this stunning castle was built on the foundations of a Roman 'castellum' and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. A local guide will then escort you on foot around this pretty village after which you will have free time for lunch. This afternoon we will visit the area known as Little Switzerland, which is also known as the Mullerthal.
This escorted coach tour will allow you to discover this picturesque area of northern Luxembourg which is very popular with ramblers. During the tour, we will visit Echternach, a medieval town famous for its imposing Basilica and also world famous for its ‘Dancing Procession’. The Basilica houses Saint Willibrord’s white marble sarcophagus, who was a Northumbrian monk who brought Christianity to the region in around 700AD. Dinner is included tonight.
Day 3 – Today we travel in to Luxembourg City where a guided tour of the city both on foot and by coach will give you a unique picture of the history of this little Grand-Duchy, unfolding a journey through the past to the modern day. A visit to the Villeroy & Boch Porcelain Manufacturer Factory Outlet is included during your time in the city. This afternoon we make our way to Diekirch where a guided visit to the fascinating Military History Museum (Battle of the Bulge) is included. This is one of the best private collections and memorabilia from the Luxembourg Battle of the Bulge which took place during the winter of 1944-1945. Dinner is included at the hotel tonight.
Day 4 – Today we travel across the border to Trier, Germany's oldest town, which has an abundance of Roman history and is a fascinating city. You will start with a tour on the Roemer Express, an electric train, which is an excellent way to see the main sights including the Porta Nigra. There will be free time afterwards before we continue onto Grevenmacher and its wine cellars, a perfect way to end a busy day. Discover the excellence of a sparkling wine, naturally elaborated according to an ancestral and traditional method. In the dim light of the underground galleries which are almost 1km long, discover the secret of the high quality of the wines and crémants. A tasting of their wine is included and purchases can be made also. Dinner is included t the hotel this evening.
Day 5 – Checking out of the hotel after breakfast, we retrace our steps through Belgium making a stop in the pretty riverside Ardennes town of Dinant, famous as the birth place of Adolph Sax, inventor of the Saxophone. An early lunch can be purchased here before we continue towards the coast for our return crossing to the UK. You will be returned to your original departure point(s) during the evening.
