From Porto one of Europe’s oldest cities, to the traditions and architecture of Salamanca and Vila Real, this cruise is full of ancient charm, whilst you also enjoy the wonderful port wines that this area is renowned for.
One of the boats used is MS Infante, it offers modern & superbly appointed accommodation and facilities for all passengers. Cabins are fully equipped with ensuite facilities, shower, hairdryer, satellite TV, radio, safe, central heating/air conditioning, 220v electricity and radiophone. Delicious food is served on board and includes an extensive buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with French inspiration. Day 1 Porto
Arriving in Porto where you can board the ship from late afternoon. Once on board you can settle into your cabin before a presentation of the crew which is followed by a welcome cocktail served in the lounge. Dinner is served on board followed by a pre-bookable optional coach excursion exploring Porto by night.
Day 2 Porto
Included excursion: Guided tour of Porto, which is one of the oldest cities in Europe, whose historic centre is classed as a world heritage site by UNESCO and has a real charm of its own. Porto would not be complete without a chance to experience the Port wines at a famous cellar. Lunch on board followed by free time this afternoon to discover Porto at your own pace, or take the transfer downtown by rabello. Return on board for dinner and sample a traditional ‘Fado’ evening (Portugese folk music).
Day 3 Porto - Regua
Today starts with an included half day excursion to Guimarães which is considered the birthplace of Portugal because of Afonso Henriques, who went on to be the first king of Portugal, was born here. The historical centre that was within the Guimarães city walls, is associated with the formation and identity of Portugal, and was classified a World Heritage site based on the originality and authenticity applied in its restoration. The city still has a harmonious, well-preserved heritage that is evident in the graceful iron verandas, granite balconies and porticos, mansions, arches connecting the narrow streets, paving slabs smoothed by time, towers and cloisters. Return on board for lunch, during which you will be able to admire the fabulous landscapes as we cruise to Regua. We will travel through the lock at Carrapatelo, the highest in Europe at 36m. Dinner is served on board followed by a dinner-dance or you may choose to take a leisurely stroll through Regua by night.
Day 4 Regua - Vega De Teron
Buffet breakfast on board before departing on pre-bookable optional morning excursion to Vila Real, a town with a great variety of religious buildings and architecture during which a visit to the stunning Casa de Mateus is included. Built in the first half of the 18 century this palace which is set in beautiful gardens on a vast farm is considered to be one of the finest examples of baroque civil architecture in Portugal. Its interior decoration includes some intricately carved wood ceilings, furniture from several periods, 17th and 18th century paintings, silverware, ceramics and a library. For those who remain on the ship you will cruise onto Pinhao, where the group will re-gather for lunch on board. We sail into the heart of the vineyards of Porto, past magnificent hillsides covered in trellised vines plunging majestically towards the river. We will arrive in Vega De Teron during the evening whilst dinner is served on board, followed by a traditional flamenco evening.
Day 5 Barca d'Alva
Buffet breakfast onboard. Today’s full day included excursion is to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salamanca, a beautiful old town full of Romanesque, Arab and Christian architecture. Lunch is included at a local restaurant during today’s excursion. We return on board in Barca d'Alva for dinner followed by an evening of entertainment.
Day 6 Barca d'Alva - Ferradosa - Pinhao
Enjoy a morning cruise through the locks in Pocinho and Valeria as we continue on to Ferradosa, arriving after lunch. This afternoon we include a tour of the Porto Wine Road. Porto is famous for its wines, especially Port wine, and you will have the opportunity to discover these amazing wines for yourself. Explore some of the most well-known wine-making towns along the Wine Road and visit a local ‘quinta’ (wine cellar) for a wine tasting experience. During this time the ship cruises to Pinhao which is known for its splendid ‘azulejos’ (typical Portuguese tiles). Tonight’s highlight is a splendid Gala evening on board the MS Infante.
Day 7 Pinhao - Porto
After breakfast, for those who pre-book, we offer a pre-bookable optional guided tour of Lamego where you will have the opportunity to discover the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Sanctuary and Cathedral. Situated in the Douro's Norte Region, Lamego boasts an incredible historical city centre with beautiful architecture and many amazing sights to take in. The ship then cruises back to Porto where your final dinner on board is followed by a traditional evening.
Day 8 Porto
Buffet breakfast on board followed by disembarkation.
