Sample Itinerary
Day 1 – Departing early this morning we travel to the coast for your short channel ferry crossing to Calais.
Arriving in France, our journey takes us through France to the Lorraine region, where we will overnight. Dinner is included this evening at the hotel.

Day 2 – Breakfast included at the hotel before continuing on to Germany and Oberammergau region for your 2 night stay.Check in to your accommodation and enjoy some time at leisure before dinner.

Day 3 - Enjoy the morning in Oberammergau before an included restaurant lunch. The Passion Play Theatre is in the village centre close to restaurants, cafés, shops and the many woodcarving workshops. The first part of the play takes place in the afternoon. During the interval enjoy an included dinner. The play resumes in the early evening and ends at approximately 22.30hrs.
A return shuttle transfer between your accommodation & Oberammergau is included (set times).

Day 4 - Departing the Oberammergau region we travel north through Bavaria, making our way towards the Alsace region. A stop will be made in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart where a visit to Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is included. This was the first residence of the Dukes, then the summer residence of the first King of Württemberg - Castle Ludwigsburg plays an important role in the history of the country. During an included tour of the magnificent state rooms you will experience an impressive journey through time, from sumptuous Baroque through playful Rococo to elegant classicism. A special feature is the Palace Theatre with its original stage machinery from 1758. Several museums and permanent exhibitions in the castle provide insights into the lifestyle of the past. The castle gardens were built in 1954 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the castle, partly following the historical form and partly recreated in the Baroque style. Since then, the ‘Blooming Baroque’ and its fairy tale garden has been a popular destination. There will not be time to visit all of the attractions at this site.
Continuing onto your hotel, dinner is included this evening.

Day 5 - Following breakfast, this morning is a leisurely one as we begin by taking a ‘petit train’ tour of historic Colmar (audio commentary included). This is a city full of charm and atmosphere whose streets and alley-ways have been preserved since the Middle-Ages. Churches, cloisters, half-timbered houses, balconies, facades with ornate wood sculptures, paintings, gables, and edifices from the Renaissance period, all add to this very special city. This is a perfect introduction to showing you much of what the city has to offer in a relaxed way, after which and once familiarised with the centre, you will have some free time to explore further at your leisure.
This afternoon’s excursion is to the pretty Alsacian town of Obernai, which is the second most-visited town in Alsace after Strasbourg. Steeped in charm and history, this compact town is a delight to explore with its many traditional half-timbered houses, old town square, church and Belfry. Returning to Colmar, dinner this evening is at your leisure when you can choose between the many restaurants in Colmar, maybe choosing to try some local specialities (payable locally).

Day 6 - Today is dedicated to the City of Strasbourg where on arrival, we begin with an included 70 minute river cruise which will take you on a commentated discovery tour along the waterways of the city, a perfect introduction to Strasbourg. Following the cruise, the remainder of the day is at your leisure to explore at your own pace. A must see during your free time is a visit to the stunning Cathedral which has many treasures including stained glass windows dating from the 12th - 14th Centuries, the St. Pancrace's Altar (1522), the 17th Century tapestries forming the Virgin's Wall covering and a popular curiosity, the Astronomical Clock. There is much to see in Strasbourg including the area known as La Petite France in the historic old quarter. Due to the richness and sheer density of the city’s heritage sites, the entire town centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We remain in the Strasbourg for an included early 3 course group dinner at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel later this evening.

Day 7 - Today is to be spent travelling through some of the Alsace Wine Route, where we begin with a visit to the pretty town of Riquewihr. Situated between the peaks of the Vosges Mountains and the Plain of Alsace, this is a medieval town in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards, classified as one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’.
For centuries, this magnificent town has managed to combine the quality of its architecture with the quality of its world-famous wines, from where it gets its nickname ‘The Gem of the Alsace Vineyards’. Riquewihr is an ‘open-air museum’ which has managed to preserve its authentic character behind its city walls, which are now besieged only by the vines. There will be free time for you to explore here and buy lunch before we next visit the nearby Castle of Haut-Koenigsberg (entrance included), where from the moment you step over the threshold of the great door you find yourself in the Middle-Ages. Cross the lower Courtyard with its inn, forge and mill then climb the spiral stairways leading to the Lord's furnished apartments. Plunge into an environment of architecture and furnishings steeped in history. The omni-present drawbridges, armoury, keep and cannons are a constant reminder of the purpose of this mountain fortress, which has been besieged, destroyed and pillaged numerous times since its construction. There is some walking involved with steps and gradients to access the castle.
A relaxing way to finish today is with an included visit to the wine cellars of Gustave Lorentz, where a tasting of a number of their wines accompanied by local savoury snacks is included, before returning to Colmar, passing through the pretty town of Ribeauvillé. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening.

Day 8 - Checking out of the hotel, we begin today with an included visit to Wingen-sur-Moder and the stunning Lalique Museum, whose collections include over 650 exceptional works following the career of René Lalique and his successors. Your visit here begins with an introductory presentation followed by free time to visit the various exhibitions. The museum is set out by theme and in chronological order and houses a broad selection of Lalique creations, including Art Nouveau jewellery, Art Deco glass and contemporary crystal. Continuing our journey through France an overnight stop will be made in the Champagne region. Overnight at hotel + dinner.

Day 9 - Departing after breakfast, a visit to Reims is included where you will have free time before continuing onto Calais for a late afternoon channel crossing. Once back in the UK you will be returned to your original departure point(s) later tonight.
